Opening Session in Cause for Sainthood of Blessed Francis Seelos to Take Place at Baltimore Basilica

Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, Archbishop of Baltimore, will preside over the opening session in the Diocesan Inquiry into an alleged healing through the intercession of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss. R. during the 12:10 Mass at the Baltimore Basilica on Tuesday, May 19. If the healing is deemed miraculous by the Vatican’s Congregation of the Causes of the Saints, it may lead to the canonization of Blessed Seelos.

Mass will Honor Police and Fire Personnel
On Sunday, May 24, 2009 at 10:45am, Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, Archbishop of Baltimore, will celebrate a Blue Mass to honor the brave men and women of the Police and Fire Departments. Reverend Jeffrey S. Dauses, Rector of the Baltimore Basilica, will concelebrate the Mass. Cardinal William H. Keeler, Archbishop Emeritus of Baltimore, will be in attendance.

Historic Vestment Display the Baltimore Basilica
Some of the historic vestments from the Basilica's collection will be on display in the temporary exhibit space, from April 1 - September 27, 2009.
The exhibit includes James Cardinal Gibbons' golden vestments, which he wore during the Third Plenary Council in 1884 (the Basilica Museum showcases the matching chalice veil and burse); a set of Irish Poplin vestments from the bishop and clergy of the Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, to Archbishop Michael J. Curley, which feature stunning hand-stitched Celtic designs; along with several other beautiful and historic vestments.

Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, Archbishop of Baltimore, will place a wreath at the statue of Pope John Paul II in the prayer garden named in his honor on Thursday April 2 at 10 a.m., in recognition of the fourth anniversary of the late pontiff’s death.
